Building the New Lab: Part 3

DS412

As of vSphere 5.1 it isn’t necessary to use shared storage between hosts for vMotion and svMotion, however I wanted to work with all of my data in one location. I could run this as one of many RAID levels, however I chose to provision the NAS as JBOD.

The NAS has room for more expansion. As I was working to keep this lab within my budget I ended up putting a chunk of change towards the Synology DS412+. I refuse to use any other NAS brand. Synology has me for life. The quality is unbeatable, the DSM Operating system is fantastic, and I’ve tried several different versions that I loved (DS1512+, DS212j, DS412+, etc). Now, Synology is more expensive, but its ok! You won’t be disappointed! I then went for 2x 1TB Western Digital Black 7200 RPM Hard drives. The 412+ has 4 bays and 2 Gigabit NICs. I intend to either place some large capacity SSD drives in the other 2 bays, or buy a few 2 or 3TB  Hard drives just for the added capacity.
